Symptoms of Mesothelioma

It may take anywhere from 20 to 45 years after exposure to asbestos for mesothelioma symptoms to appear.

Symptoms arising from mesothelioma usually come on gradually. Typical symptoms include shortness of breath, chest pain or pain in the back, flank, shoulder, or upper abdomen, weight loss, cough, and fever. Less common symptoms of mesothelioma are enlarged lymph nodes in the neck and feeling a mass in the chest.

Each form of the disease has its own particular symptoms:

Pleural Mesothelioma
Symptoms of this most common form of malignant mesothelioma, which attacks the lungs and lining of the chest cavity include: chest pain, shortness of breath, weight loss, coughing, or general weakness. Individuals often present to doctors with a collection of fluid in the pleural space called a pleural effusion.

Peritoneal Mesothelioma
Malignant peritoneal mesothelioma is a cancer of the membrane that covers the abdominal cavity or stomach. Symptoms may include abdominal pain, abdominal swelling, loss of appetite, weight loss or weakness. With this type of the disease, fluid can accumulate in the abdominal space, which can cause or contribute to the above symptoms.

Pericardial Mesothelioma
The early symptoms of this form of cancer in the chest cavity include: chest pain, dyspnea (breathlessness), cough and palpitations.
